WIDE OPEN SPACES
CHAPTER 3
Grand Teton National Park
The Grand
The Tetons are both young and old. The youngest range in the Rockies, started pushing skyward a mere 9,000 years ago, but is forged from a 2.7 billion-year old metamorphic rock that gives the 40-mile range its rugged and unforgiving appearance.
Below, the emerald green Snake River twists and turns through the valley, providing a lush landscape and habitat for wildlife from bison to bears to bald eagles.
Chapter 3 of our Wide Open Spaces series celebrates the spectacular Grand Teton National Park and is part of Wyoming Whiskey’s commitment and partnership with the Grand Teton National Park Foundation and their efforts to steward, protect, and enhance all that is special in the park.

Four Places,
Four Special Whiskies
In celebration of Wyoming’s two national parks – Yellowstone & Grand Teton – Wyoming Whiskey created four singular bottles of whiskey, selected for both their quality and uniqueness. Each exclusive bottle will feature a label with an aerial photograph from the Wyoming parks, and accompanying large format print of that same image.
Wyoming photographer Tuck Fauntleroy was given the task of finding the 4 unique places. Taking to the air to discover and deliver the uncommon images from the combined 3,957 square miles of national parks.
Actor, conservationist, Wyoming-legend, Harrison Ford, choosing the final four images from Fauntleroy’s photo trove, with an eye for unique and original looks from the two parks. Four unique places and images. Captured by Fauntleroy, and selected by Ford.
Celebrated with four special whiskies and worthy vessels crafted by wood-worker Jamison Sellers, which mark the spot of the places within the two national treasures.
With proceeds going back to support the National Park Foundation in recognition of the inspiration and wonder the parks provide to us all.

photographer
Tuck Fauntleroy is a Jackson, Wyoming based photographer who has spent the last decade taking flight to photograph dramatic and remote images of Wyoming and the American West. His ongoing series of work, Waterline, focuses on natural river lines and snow-covered terrain captured from the air.
Tuck’s aerial perspective, experience shooting above Grand Teton and Yellowstone and artistic connection to the parks and time of year, made him the perfect creative partner for Wide Open Spaces/By Air.
woodworker
The custom boxes for the project were created by woodworker and furniture designer Jamison Sellers. Jamison leads the Portland, Oregon based Bolster Furniture & Design, building custom furniture that emphasizes simplicity and efficient use of materials to minimize the environmental impact of production.
Like everything Jamison designs and builds, each box is a unique and original piece, working with Western Walnut (and Western Maple hardwoods) and a combination of computer modeling and hand tools to render the sculptural topographies of each of these four special places within the two national parks.
master blender
The four Single Bottle Select whiskeys were chosen by Nancy Fraley, of Nosing Services in Berkeley, California. Nancy is a free-lance Master Blender and international consultant who works with Wyoming Whiskey and other notable craft distillers. Nancy is also Instructor of Maturation, Warehousing, and Blending and Nosing for Faults at the American Distilling Institute. She sits on the faculty at the Distilled Spirits Epicenter’s “Moonshine University” in Louisville, KY. She is creator of the American Craft Whiskey Aroma Wheel, a sensory tool for distillers and whiskey connoisseurs.
THE OPALESCENT AND SUNSET POOLS
It’s a rare obsidian that gives Black Sand Basin its name. Part of the massive Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone, it’s home to Sunset Lake with its blazing yellow-orange rim and Opalescent Pool, which is fed by the almost constantly erupting Spouter Geyser. The hotter and more active Spouter is, the bigger and brighter the opal shines.
STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY
Representing both the very best of our wheat recipe Small Batch Bourbon aroma profile “A” and the perfect Cask Strength barrel, #5434 presents notes of caramel, orange, and creamy vanilla that is commonly found in our flagship bourbon. Additionally, it exudes more intriguing aromas of thick vanilla cake batter with creamy white coconut icing, Southern sweet iced tea with sliced lemon, spring honeysuckle flowers, and savory hints of dried autumn leaves, eucalyptus tree, and tarragon. The palate exudes flavors of grilled white peaches and Chinese 5 spice powder, with a decadent mouth feel of crème fraiche and orange sorbet, followed by waves of brown baking spice and clementine. An exceptionally well-balanced, expressive, and elegant Bourbon.
The Hayden Geological Survey of 1871 marks the dawn of scientific study in Yellowstone and included frontier photographer William Henry Jackson and painter Thomas Moran. Jackson and Moran’s images helped convince Congress to make Yellowstone the nation’s first national park in 1872.
AMERICAN STRAIGHT WHISKEY
Representing the other component of the Outryder franchise, the deep mahogany Hayden Valley features a mash bill of 48% winter rye, 40% corn, and 12% malted barley. It also represents our aroma profile “C,” with deep, dark notes, and hails from high in Warehouse A against the western-most side wall, row 19F. The extreme cold and heat differentials of Wyoming weather directly affect the barrels housed here, thus exposing and influencing the rugged terroir. Barrel #2864 displays bold aromas of dark chocolate covered cherries, wintergreen leaves, and Devil’s food chocolate cake with coconut and walnut icing. The palate offers intense notes of Demerara sugar, Persian black tea, muddled mint leaves, and dill, with a long, semi-sweet finish of aromatic pipe tobacco, ruby Port, and Jamaican allspice. A big, bold Bourbon with strong shoulders and a surprisingly soft, pleasant finish at 127 proof.
THE MOST ICONIC PEAK IN THE WEST
The tallest of Grand Teton’s peaks is as iconic as it is inspiring. The Grand Teton soars 13,775 feet from where the Snake River carves the valley floor below and gives Grand Teton National Park its name.
STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY
Grand Teton is a Rye Bourbon from a mash bill of 68% corn, 20% winter rye, and 12% malted barley. This whiskey helps make up our Outryder whiskey, but has never been released as a Single Barrel expression. The barrel comes from what is known as a “center cut,” meaning it comes from the middle of the warehouse, and was harvested from Warehouse A, row 21C. It represents our “A/B” aroma profile of Outryder. Grand Teton expresses notes of blackberry cobbler with a cinnamon-sprinkled biscuit crust, English sticky toffee pudding, and honeyed hay. The palate offers flavors of cream cheese frosting, floral white tea, dill, and toasted coconut shavings, with a finish of baking spices and orange blossom honey. Much like the Wheat Bourbon from barrel #5434, Grand Teton is an exceptionally balanced whiskey with great finesse and a spectrum of flavors to suit every palate.
At 7,733 feet and 132 square miles, the natural Yellowstone Lake weighs-in as the largest high elevation lake in North America. With the exception of thermal spots, the lake will freeze over in winter, but the bottom is hydrothermally active and part of the world’s largest continental hydrothermal system.
STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY
Barrel #5004 represents the finest of our wheat recipe Small Batch Bourbon aroma profile “C,” in addition to being a darker, richer expression of the rare Cask Strength release. It hails from the top tiers of Warehouse A, row 29F, and offers notes of prunes in sweet syrup, black currant, and Persian black tea. The palate has flavors of sassafras Root Beer with vanilla bean ice cream, anise, the slight smoke and spice of chipotle pepper, with the nuttiness of pistachio and almond baklava smothered with fragrant orange blossom water and honey. The finish is long, with hints of Medjool dates, thick molasses, and savory desert sage blossom honey. A complex Bourbon with a wide spectrum of sweet, savory, spicy, smoky, and nutty aromas.
